The human spine is made up of 24 movable bony segments called vertebrae. This vertebral column and the muscles attached to it support your entire upper body. These spinal bones also form a protective canal for your spinal cord. Your spinal cord is the continuation of your brain stem and is the main channel for the transmission of nerve impulses between your brain and your body. These nerve impulses carry vital information and messages from and to your brain. You can think of your brain as your body's central processing unit and your spinal cord as the main cable that connects all the body parts. Your brain is constantly producing vital messages that travel via electrical impulses to specific body parts to perform specific functions. Crucial life functions such as breathing, heartbeat, and digestion are dependent on these nerve impulses. Any interference with this process can result in a decrease in the function of that particular body part. This interference can be traced back to poor posture. |
